A Letter from the Pastor

February 2022

So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. - Galatians 6:9

Anyone else find themselves more tired, run-down, and/or apathetic than usual? I continue to hear these feelings when I speak to so many in our community. (And certainly am experiencing them myself!) Our high school youth group recently explored whether Jesus got stressed out, anxious, or overwhelmed (Spoiler alert: he did!). AND we looked at practices Jesus used to maintain his mental health…

EXERCISE – Mark 6:3

Did you know that getting your heart rate up for just 20 minutes can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and depression? When was Jesus “working out”? During Jesus’ time, life was exercise. He was a carpenter by trade, and we know the energy it takes working with wood, stone, and construction! Additionally, it is estimated that during his three years of ministry, Jesus walked over 2000 miles a year.

FOOD – Mark 2:13-17

Anyone ever get “hangry” (angry because you are hungry)? We notice that Jesus is ALWAYS eating and sharing food with other people. It is important to keep ourselves fed and fueled. Although, it is also important to be mindful of what and why we are eating, so that we avoid self-medicating.

FRIENDS/FAMILY – Luke 6:12-16

Jesus has a support system! There are the apostles, then other disciples, and also patrons who provide for the ministry. If the Son of God doesn’t do it all on his own, maybe we shouldn’t try either?

REST – Mark 4:35-41

It is striking that Jesus is depicted as resting, sleeping, and napping in our gospel accounts. How can we allow our bodies and spirits to rest more?

PRAYER – Luke 22:39-46

It is tempting when we are overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious to denigrate ourselves and tell ourselves all sorts of lies like we are weak or unfaithful. The truth is that life is hard, painful, and difficult sometimes! Luke’s account of the Garden of Gethsemane has Jesus so stressed that it says that he was sweating blood (a legitimate medical condition). Again, if Jesus can get that overwhelmed, how much more each of us? If you are angry, sad, and/or suffering, tell God about it! Be honest and shout how much you need God’s help, strength, and support. And ask others to pray for and with you!

Most of all, know that you are not alone. God will not—and will never—abandon you! I also invite you to reach out -- I’d love to talk with you, pray with you, and/or bring you Holy Communion.
